Cultural Season #4 : On the Spot

The French Institute of Cambodia is pleased to invite you to discover its new cultural season entitled "On the Spot", which will be held from September 26th, 2024 to January 15th, 2025! This season highlights the art of photography, where each image tells a story, capturing fleeting moments and revealing deep emotions. It will host two highlights in its exhibition gallery: 

• from September 26th to November 9th, 2024, a retrospective of the works of Cambodian photographer Mak Remissa
• from November 21st, 2024 to January 15th, 2025, a selection of photographs retracing the fifteen-year history of the Photo Phnom Penh festival.

Through his plastic creations and photographs, Mak Remissa presents his vision of environmental issues and reveals the fragile balances of natural and social elements. He also works on the memory of the tragic genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. Join us on Thursday, September 26th at 6:30 p.m. for the inauguration of his exhibition, entitled "The voice of images", which will present photographs from 5 series he produced during his career.

As part of the Photo Phnom Penh festival, the IFC gallery will host, following the Mak Remissa exhibition, a selection of photographs tracing the fifteen-year history of the festival. This exhibition aims to encourage exchanges between European and Asian artists. Sixty photographers who have already exhibited at the festival have been asked to send a new photograph or one that has never been exhibited in Cambodia before. These artists come mainly from Europe and Asia. This retrospective will offer a complete overview of the evolution of photography and its impact in Cambodia.

Simultaneously with this exhibition, on the wall of the IFC media library, the works of Ourng Sam Ang will be highlighted. He captures the beauty and complexity of the world by making landscape photography his favorite field. Representative of the young Cambodian photography scene, he offers a unique and innovative perspective on the treasures of the country's natural heritage.

"On the Spot" is the perfect opportunity to discover and appreciate the art of photography in all its forms. Through these exhibitions, we invite you to explore the wealth of photographic know-how.

Whether capturing an intimate portrait, exploring grandiose landscapes, or documenting authentic moments, photography reveals the beauty and complexity of the world around us. Photographs allow us to discover countless creative possibilities, providing a dynamic platform for personal or collective expression.
