When her mother dies, Cambodian manga artist Sorya travels to Cambodia to reconnect with the country her mother fled. There, she discovers a family she never knew, and moves into her mother’s apartment in an old building full of dark secrets. Tenement is a psychological thriller film directed by two first-time directors, Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea. The film was shot in Cambodia and Japan, and premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival in the Netherlands in January 2024, as well as several festivals around the world, including Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, Bucheon, Sitges, Lisbon, and Long Beach. The film also won the Best Production Design award at the Ho Chi Minh Film Festival.
Its Cambodian release, scheduled for November 14, will make it the first-ever Cambodian film to feature Dolby Atmos sound. Special attention was paid to the film’s sound to create an immersive atmosphere and elevate Khmer cinema to new ground. Hoping to bring the classic horror and ghost films that have become popular in Cambodia in recent years to new territories, the Tenement production team has managed to surprise international audiences and hopes to achieve the same in their home country.
