Lia est une femme têtue qui ne s'intègre pas dans la mentalité rigide de la Sicile de 1965. Ce qui commence comme un conte de fées avec Lorenzo se transforme rapidement en cauchemar lorsqu'il la prend par la force. Selon la morale, Lia doit épouser l'homme qui l'a violée pour sauver son honneur, acceptant la tradition commune du mariage réparateur. Mais pour la première fois dans l'histoire italienne, elle va défier toutes les attentes sociales et s'engager dans une bataille personnelle et juridique pour l'autodétermination.
