Carmen Comes Home, by Keisuke Kinoshita (1951)
Japanese with English subtitles
86 minutes
This monumental motion picture is not only the first ever color film shot in Japan, but it also ranks as one of the most successful, widely-beloved comedies that Japan has ever produced. When the daughter, Lily Carmen, decides that she returns to her home village for a visit, her father becomes very angry, remarking that he never has a daughter with a foreign name. Three years ago, Carmen left for Tokyo for excitement and adventure of the big city. The village people have only heard about her celebrity but don't really have an idea of what she was famous for, assuming she is a famous dancer. When the fact that she is a well-known stripper comes to light, the scandal spreads. While dispraised, Carmen and her friend from Tokyo genuinely believe that strip show is art, and they symbolize a new trend of Japanese youth that both disturbs and intrigues the conservative village people. Shot in Fujicolor film, joyful episodes and satirical descriptions develop in the gorgeous landscape of Japan accompanied by distinguished actors including Yasujiro Ozu’s regular Chishu Ryu, and the golden age actress Hideko Takamine who plays the title role.
